Body Confidence

It’s no surprise that many women have body issues. “I’m too fat, too thin, my eyes are too small, my hair is flat, my legs are chunky,” and the list goes on. It doesn’t matter if you are at a healthy weight or not. I’m sure this applies to men, too, it’s just we hear so much about it as it applies to women–in part, because of campaigns like Dove Real Beauty.

When you have a lot of weight to lose and have worked hard to lose 50+ lbs, it can be frustrating to look in the mirror and not see any changes. The first thing I would suggest is taking photos. If you can take them in similar clothing, lighting, and poses, it will really help to compare. I couldn’t see the difference until I compared photos side-by-side.

Ashley Drake GephartIn addition, don’t focus on the parts you don’t like. I hate my stomach; it’s not at all in proportion to the rest of me. My tush looks lumpy and I lost a tooth a few years back. When I smile, you can notice it. But I still have a great smile; I just now turn so that my right side is more visible. I love my hair color. It doesn’t matter that purple isn’t my natural color. LOL!

Ashley LegsAnd while I’m still large, I think I have awesome legs. Focus on the parts you do like. If you’re having trouble finding a part you like, ask others. If you aren’t comfortable asking family and friends, you can join a community like MyFitnessPal and join any of the threads that talk about “Name the best feature from the poster above.”

Yes, we might still need to lose weight or tone up our stomach, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t something beautiful about us.

Face Your Fear

Ashley and NatashaHow many things do we put off doing because of fear? I’ve been on oxygen full time for over a year now. Just a few weeks ago, I was put on a bipap machine, which just added more to my health-related equipment. I’ve been afraid to go more than a short drive from my home. I haven’t left the city since I was put on the oxygen.

I’ve wanted to take a trip, even if just a short one, but my fear kept me from doing it. What if I ran out of oxygen? What if I got too tired? The “what- ifs” were endless.

I’m writing this in the middle of “Nowhere” New Mexico on my way to Denver. This is the furthest from home I’ve been since 2004. For my daughters 17th birthday, I bought her tickets to the Marilyn Manson/Rob Zombie concert. My initial thought had been her father could drive her and I would stay home. But after much encouragement, I agreed to go. I will admit that, as late as last night’s loading the car with oxygen tanks, I tried to back out.

But I got up this morning, got behind the wheel, and faced my fear as I drove us toward Las Vegas–not the good one, but the NM one.

You know what? It feels pretty damn good!

When we hit Pueblo, I saw a billboard that said “Stop being and start doing”. Are you doing or just being? What have you been putting off? Going back to school, hiking that mountain, writing a novel, or just packing up and moving across the country? Don’t let your fear hold you back any longer!

Go out there and face your fear!

Stress Busters

Stressed woman yellingWith the upcoming holiday season, many of us will feel pulled in many different directions. Family gatherings, work parties, church to-dos, children’s events, and the list goes on. While we want to do everything and celebrate with those we love, it can be an overwhelming and stressful time.

Nearly half of all women in the United States experience heightened stress during the holidays at great risk to the health of their minds and bodies, according to a national survey by the American Psychological Association (APA).

Most of us who are struggling with our weight are stress eaters. You have to make sure to take care of yourself. Here are some tips and ideas to get you through the holiday season.

Sleep
Get enough! If you’re tired, it’s going to be even harder to keep up with the holiday spirit.

No
As tempting as it is to say yes to every invitation, sometimes you just have to say no.

Music
Take a few minutes during a stressful day, slip on your earbuds, and tune out the craziness around you.

Eat
Healthy, that is! With all the rich holiday fare, make sure you get some healthy options in.

Write
Write out your to-do lists, lists of things you are worried about, and what you are grateful for.

Keep Calm and BreatheBreathe
Take a few minutes to sit quietly and just breathe.

Exercise
Take a yoga class or just a walk around the block.

Read
Spend a lazy afternoon with a good book.

Drink
No alcohol! Pour a cup of tea or hot chocolate.

Movie
Whether at the theater or quietly at home, indulge in a movie just for you.

Assistance
Ask for help. Let others pick up the turkey or a last-minute gift.

Sunshine
With the shorter amount of light, it’s important to remember to get some sun.

Silly
Do something silly. Blow bubbles, get a coloring book,  or do an impromptu dance in the living room.

Laugh
Put on a funny movie or watch a comedy skit, but get a good chuckle in.

Flowers
Buy yourself a bouquet and put it where you can see it often.

Crock-pot
Toss in a meal before heading out for a day of shopping and enjoy dinner waiting.

Sex
Never under-estimate what a little afternoon delight can do for soaring stress levels.

Pulmonary Rehab

I started pulmonary rehab last week. Since I’m getting lots of questions about why, I thought I would just put up a post.

In March 2011, I was hospitalized with pneumonia for four days. Since they couldn’t get my oxygen saturation levels up, they sent me home with oxygen. I’ve been on it full-time ever since.

The first pulmonologist I saw said that my lungs had no blockage, scarring, or other obvious problems. That’s the good news. The bad news? They don’t know why I can’t get my oxygen saturation levels up. The best guesses? 1) Being overweight. Okay, I know being overweight is blamed for everything from heart issues to a stubbed toe. But, in this case, I agree it’s a valid point since I was approximately 200 pounds overweight at the time. Fast forward a year with 82 pounds lost and I am still at the same flow rate I was when I left the hospital. Obviously, something else is going on. 2) I’m a shallow breather. Have been for as long as I can remember; I think I was born tense. 3) My lungs are weak and just need strengthened. 4) I have anxieties and basically just forget to breathe right. See reason #2. 5) They have no clue and don’t know what do with me. It also doesn’t help that we live in a very high elevation and even healthy people can get altitude sickness when they come here.

I saw a new primary care doctor at the beginning of May and he suggested pulmonary rehab. HELLO? What is this? Of course I’m interested. I’ve busted my ass for the last year to lose weight and have been asking just what else I can do to help myself. Just point me in the right direction as I’m beyond motivated to get off the oxygen. Not sure why my pulmonary doctor couldn’t be bothered to suggest this, but I’m not going to think about that too much lest I stop breathing right now from the stress of it.

Went back to the pulmonary clinic and saw a nurse this time. She wasted no time getting me into the rehab program. It’s 36 sessions of education and exercise. It meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for about 2.5 hours. I started May 21st. I feel like I’m getting my ass or, in this case, my lungs kicked. But I know they are monitoring my levels every time I move so I won’t pass out from lack of oxygen. I have high hopes for this program. Stay tuned…

New Nightgowns!

I figured after losing 80+ lbs, it was about time for a new nightgown. I ended up getting two since Lane Bryant had been having a sale. It’s hard to keep the enthusiasm up when you are still wearing the same nightgown you did at your highest weight. I don’t know why I waited so long!

Out with the old nightgown

Weight Loss Motivation

These past few weeks haven’t been good in the motivational department. I started off 2012 at 296.2 and had high hopes for hitting my lowest weight since 1990 by the end of February. I just needed to lose another 13 lbs. I got down to 294 and, like I knew would happen, stopped losing weight. About every 3-4 weeks, I don’t lose anything for 1-3 weeks and then I lose about 4 lbs in one week. It averages out nicely, so I wasn’t worried. Three weeks passed, then four, then five. We are now at six weeks and I’m still just bouncing around 294-296.

I stopped logging my food, then my water, then I stopped doing much exercise. Of course, this doesn’t help. I logged into myfitnesspal everyday, but I wasn’t commenting or even really reading much. I haven’t updated this site in weeks. I’m dehydrated most days, my lower back is sore from the weakened core muscles, and it’s just amazing I haven’t gotten back over 300 lbs.

I need a reboot, so to speak. I’m going to drop out of all the challenges I’m in right now and just focus on logging food and water, and getting some basic exercise in everyday.

There are some really supportive people on myfitnesspal and I don’t want to lose touch with them, so I’m hoping that by not doing so much with the challenges and other groups, I can stay better connected to them.

I don’t think I will hit my goal of 100 lbs off by April 1st, my 18th wedding anniversary, but I just might be the lowest weight Karl has ever seen me at!

On a fun note. I was writing a post for a business blog and was playing around with a program from Sherman Williams called Chip It! Basically, you take a photo and it gives you a color palette for paints. For fun, I took one of my before- and during- photos to see what it came up with.

I have to say I LOVE the color names. Talk about motivating!

Dragon Fruit – Drake, my middle name means “dragon” and pink has been referred to as my signature color!
Downing Stones – In the UK, weight is measured in “stones.” I sure would love to down more of them!
Heartthrob – Who doesn’t want to be referred to as a heartthrob? ;)
Determined Orange – I’m determined to lose this weight!

Conquer Your Thinking

“It is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves.” – Sir Edmund Hillary.

This really resonates with me. Last year, I realized I was holding myself back. So, I got out there and conquered my own limited thinking. We might not be able to do things the way we used to, but we can find a new way. Get out there an conquer it!

I hope you enjoy my photo. You can click it for a larger image that you can save to your computer.
